Sterling silver is an alloy containing metals that react with chemicals found in air and produce tarnish; high moisture levels, exposure to sunlight and contaminants such as salt water increase this reaction. Take steps to protect sterling silver by keeping it in airtight packages, use tarnish-resistant products (such as tarnish tabs or strips) that absorb harmful chemicals, and store sterling findings in a cool, dry place. Most tarnish is easily removed by polishing with a mild abrasive or soaking in an anti-tarnish solution.

Oxidized Sterling is tarnished with an oxidation solution given a black matte look.  Hammering the metal after oxidizing will bring out the shine.  You may polish with a soft cloth but try not to scratch the service.  Do not dip in jewelry cleaner. The beauty of oxidized sterling is it will hold its look over a long period of time.

 

Gold-filled is made by using heat and pressure to permanently bond a layer of 12- or 14-karat gold to a brass core, creating a tarnish-resistant surface. The resulting metal is then rolled and drawn to create specific raw materials like wire, single-clad sheet and double-clad sheet. Most tarnish is easily removed by polishing with a mild abrasive or soaking in an anti-tarnish solution.
